Bedroom Decor on the Cheap

It’s official: I’m never making another decision on my own without consulting you guys first.

Seriously, you’re all so helpful! After I posted my (FIRST EVER SUPER AWESOME) mood board yesterday, packed with all kinds of questions and requests for advice, you all stepped up. I got answers through gchat, comments, emails — and they were all really helpful!

If I can get super mushy for a second, it seriously warms my heart when you guys comment. It’s especially exciting when you’re people I don’t even know in “real” life, but all responses are extremely validating.

Ok, mushy second over. In other news, I’ve started pricing out my dream bedroom. As I mentioned yesterday, I’m hoping to DIY a lot of things, but there are still purchases that need to be made.

Duvet cover: Since the Target one I referenced yesterday has since been taken off the market (d’oh), I found one at Bed Bath & Beyond (of which I am a huge fan):

The only issue is that I can only find it online. The pros of this are that I don’t have to go searching for it and I can get cash back from (which you know I love), but the cons are that I have to pay shipping and I’m not sure if BBB’s endless stream of coupons applies to online purchases. I need to rustle one up and check. It would be about $75, with 1 percent cash back from Ebates. (Le sigh.)

Rug: As I mentioned yesterday, as much as I love Crate & Barrel’s pretty rug, it’s a bit too pricey for my taste. So I did what any cheap-o, decor-loving girl would do and settled for the next best thing: IKEA. Their Stockholm Rand rug would work perfectly, and it’s $100 cheaper than the C&B version:

However, it’s still not exactly free, so I’m saving my pennies.

Vanity/desk: This was a perfect example of how a commenter really came through for me. So we know I love the West Elm Parsons Desk. However, we also know that it costs a billion dollars. You know what is much more reasonable? THIS little beauty from World Market:

And it’s basically the same look. I actually like it a tiny bit better because the legs add some visual interest. Plus, um, hello? Cheaper. (Although, again, not free, so I’m trying to hold out for a coupon.)(Plus, 4 percent cash back from I MENTIONED THAT I LOVE EBATES YET?)

Other than that, I need 3 shadow boxes, fabric, a couple Goodwill lamps, and a vanity stool I can paint and recover. Sooo…yeah. Dream decor is kind of a cash suck. But I already have coupons for Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabrics, so that’s a start. And I’m trying REALLY hard not to let my excitement take over and make me spend a bunch of money right off the bat. I. Will. Take. This. Slow.

Anyone else ever find themselves diving head-first into projects (only to be left EXTREMELY poor)? Also, anyone have any cheap-o options to share? You know I love it when you do.

  1. I have gotten on a redecorating kick because I’m SO sick of my house still looking like two poor college kids got married and pushed all their used stuff into one room. Unfortunately, we are still two poor college kids who now happen to have two children which makes us even more poor! 🙂

I started looking up ways to make the house beautiful without spending tons of cash. Best site ever?

I don’t know how DIY you are, but if you can be brave you can do some amazing stuff for super cheap! Like this:
(think large scale, like goodwill desk and chair instead of teeny bathroom vanity)

Also, a gorgeous DIY tufted headboard! (I don’t know if you have a headbaord, want a headboard, etc, but look anyway. It’s amazing!

    And try

Heck, just google “DIY (insert whatever project you’re working on)” and you can find some amazing stuff. I just made a great ottoman out of a cheap, ugly, beat up IKEA side table that we were going to throw away. Cost if I had bought it? About $200. Cost to make? $25.00. AWESOME!

Another tip – use cheap items like toys,, spray paint them and turn it into something espensive-looking. Don’t believe me?
(I don’t like the red one, but the brass is gorgeous!! Cut it in half, attach to wood and you have $100 bookends for $5)

Good luck and cheap spending! 🙂

    • You’re amazing! I’m adding that blog to my reader right now 🙂 Our biggest issue is that we’re still renting, so we always go back and forth about how much effort we really want to put into our current place. If we ever get a house, I’ll probably be out of control haha.

      • No joke! We are still renters and aren’t looking to buy for a couple of years, but I can’t stand living in a bachelor pad anymore! I always thought I couldn’t decorate because my kids would destroy it, but that’s the beauty of cheap-o DIY. I would care a little if my kids broke my gorgeous white lamp with the yellow victorian shade, but it cost me $6.00 to make instead of $150 to buy, so I’d get over it.

So even if you buy a house and decide you want to start from scratch again, you’re not in for $2000 of decor, it’s more like $300. Not so hard to swallow.

  2. One word- Goodwill. My bedroom has got a jungle theme going on, and nearly every single thing (from the wooden giraffe mask to the leaf-embossed vase) came from Goodwill and I have spent under $100. All I am really missing is a better bedspread and a cover for the “new” hideous but oh-so-comfortable armchair we just inherited from some friends. I heart Goodwill. And if you find a lovely little piece of furniture in the wrong color, a little primer and spray paint can do wonders. I had a hot pink and yellow dresser that I spray painted black with zebra stripes! Brand new dresser, practically free!

    • I am a huge Goodwill fan, and after seeing about 8,000 tutorials on painting furniture, I feel totally ready to take it on. Unfortunately, we have zero indoor space to prime/paint. But now that the weather is getting warmer, I will definitely be making over some thrift store finds. And obviously blogging ALL about it 😉

      • Oh I hear you about space- I live in a little third-floor one-bedroom apartment, so I have to do my painting on the balcony… suffice it to say there are lots of pretty colors all over the handrails now. 😛

  3. Found another deal for you……check out the Double Gourd Lamp from JCPenney’s. I just received two in the Ivory color and I love them. Great quality!! They even come complete with bulbs. I had a coupon and ebates (love it too), so each lamp was $30ish. The only problem is……that I just discovered they introduced a tangerine color, which I would have preferred. Perfect for you!!! P.S. I’m glad you like the WM desk too!

    • You are on fire! That is the perfect color. I will definitely keep this in mind if I don’t find anything promising at Goodwill!

      • Ha Ha!! It just so happens that I have gray bedding, black and white accents, and a need for a vanity. I’m glad someone else can benefit from my findings.
